Free summer series roars on with two concerts in Turner Park
Playing with Fire, one of the Midwest’s leading free summer concert traditions, is announcing its 2016 Turner Park lineup and a return, by popular demand, to its original Saturday roots.
“By shifting back to Saturdays we can connect with more fans, plus reach a greater geographical radius. More people can come, travel further and stay longer,” says Jeff Davis, founder of Playing with Fire, a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
Featuring the best in blues, soul, funk, R & B and rock, Playing with Fire (PwF) celebrates its third year at Midtown Crossing’s Pavilion at Turner Park in 2016. The series was established in 2004 to bring people together to “celebrate, dance and build community” with the most accomplished international, national and local musical artists.
The 2016 Playing with Fire summer concert series line-up includes:
Saturday, July 2
Saturday, August 27
in support of Donate Life Nebraska
The Turner Park venue opens at 3:30 p.m. each day. The music begins at 4:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend, but freewill donations will be accepted.
A percentage of the giving on August 27 will benefit Donate Life Nebraska and its mission to create organ donor awareness. (Headliner Walter Trout received a life-saving liver transparent at University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2014.) The charity partner for the July 2 series will be announced at a later time.
The series continues, in its 13th year, of supporting BluesED, a non-profit youth artist development program that cultivates music education by providing performance and fundraising opportunities for students. BluesED hosts the AfterBurn Jams at Cantina Laredo immediately following each concert.
PwF is sustained by the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, the Douglas County Visitor Improvement Fund, the City of Omaha, private sponsorships plus in-kind donations and volunteers. Year after year, Davis says he and the PwF crew are energized by “seeing a diverse community come together filling the park with laughter and happiness all through the love of music.”
